I bought a used 2001 F350 Diesel that was fitted by its original owner with a performance chip. I have nothing to reference whether it makes a difference or not, but it drives like a dream. As part of the chip installation, there was also two windshield post instruments installed, an EGT gauge and an oil temp. gauge. While I can see the EGT rise and fall during operation, the oil temp. stays at 140 degrees at all times, which makes me think it doesn't function properly. Any advice as to whether this is normal and if not, where do I look to correct? Thanks for any help in advance. I am not very mechanically inclined and don't understand a lot of the abbreviations used on this site, so be as specific as possible in your replies.
140, even when cold engine start in the morning?
That sounds like a malfunctioning gauge to me.
Also it's a little on the cool side, even for a tranny IMO. You want a little heat to boil off any water vapor, etc, but not so much it fries the tranny.
My personal goal for tranny temps would be between 160 to 180 at all times.
Engine oil works best at 210 - 240F.
