i have a 200o ford ranger with a 3.0. I lost my keys and had to buy new ones. I followed all the instructions like it says. put the keys in and the theft light will flash for 15 minutes, then turn to off position and do the same, then the keys will start it. well the light on mine will only flash about three minutes, and i can't figure it out. Am i missing something? any help i would appreciate.
If you have the PATS... You need 2 already working keys to do it yourself.
Programming spare SecuriLock keys
Spare SecuriLock keys can be purchased from your dealership and
programmed to your SecuriLock passive anti-theft system (up to a
total of eight keys). Your dealership can program your new SecuriLock
key(s) to your vehicle or you can do it yourself using the following
simple procedure. To program a new SecuriLock key yourself, you will
need two previously programmed SecuriLock keys (keys that already
operate your vehicle’s engine). If two previously programmed
SecuriLock keys are not available (one or both of your original keys
were lost or stolen), you must bring your vehicle to your dealership to
have the spare SecuriLocky key(s) programmed.
yeah, I have run into that as well. You will probably have to have the dealer do it. My local "good" dealer only hit me $70 for 2 keys and the programming. Pretty reasonable I think.
I know you need two keys in order to make a new one. I did this a couple years ago on my '01' and it worked fine. I don't think $70 for a stinking key is any kind of 'good' value. The stealerships have got you by the nads and you have no choice but to give in and pay the thieves.
So, you folks with two PATS keys that work can buy PATS blanks online and make new ones easily. Do it right away so you have the extra before you lose one of the two working ones. And, yes, the new key will work as one of the two working ones so you can just keep making them as you lose them.

But considering how much the stupid GM resistor keys used to cost, the $70 was good for 2 keys and the programming. that was the total bill, tax etc.
What if you lost your keys and have none for the ignition what do you do about programming,i have a cut key with the chip how do i go about programming it to my truck.thanks kevin
One or no keys require someone with a computer that can program the computer. Meaning dealer or locksmith with modern stuff. My cousin did it for me for free. I sat there and watched it take 40 minutes doing nothing to make it work. I suspect this is so that someone like a valet or what have you cannot do it real quickly while no one is working. Ford logo key blanks with the pats thing in them are available off ebay and such for around $23 shipped per pair. GET EXTRAS have them cut and then program them yourself once you have 2 in hand.
I only had one key.I just paid $69.95 + tax to have one made and programed at a hardware store. it took the guy about 5 minutes.
It doesnt sound like your vehicle has the ford pats system. Did he program it in the store while while you waited? Or did he actually go out to the car/truck and plug in a computer to the vehicle program it? 5 mins sounds like he "programmed" it from inside the store which is not possible with the ford system.
Not sure what system I have .I have a 1999 Ranger XLT 4.0L 4X4 Automatic. He cut the key and programed it in the store.Told me to go outside and see if it worked .I did ,it did went back in and paid him. What system do I have ?
As far as I know ford only has one kind of pats system which uses keys with a unique rfid. No two keys have the same rfid. The only way the pats module will accept the new key is with two already programmed keys or a dealers computer programmed into the truck. So either your truck does not have pats and you got way overcharged or he knows some kind of voodoo that ford or anyone else is not aware of. Can you possibly post a picture of the key in question or at least post any brands and other numbers on the key?
