I have some play in my steering box that I would like to minimize. I have read somewhere that it is possible to "tighten" the box up. How can I do this?
Has anyone gone through with replacing the steering box? Is this a difficult project to do? Its getn aggrevating lookn like a drunk driving down the road. I have already replaced my ball joints, and control arm going to the pitman arm. Everything else looks good.
My '97 HD had really loose steering when I bought it. I was told it was the steering box was bad by a mechanic. As it turns out my ***** joints were really bad on one side and ok on the other side. I replaced both sides, upper and lower and it was a great improvement. But I still had some play in the wheel. I then had the steering shaft replaced. It was called the "subshaft assembly". It ran from the firewall to I think the steering box. I had it done at a steering column specialty shop. Drives like new now.
Anyway, my point is that I was told my steering box was bad and it turned out to be something else. Just a little FYI from a somewhat mechanically inclined, but far from auto mechanic guy.
