Be prepared for sticker shock...... ford Toploaders for a big block bring about $1500.. used and thatdoes not mean it still usable without a rebuild. the input shaft legenth differs. The top loader shifter will be right against the seat, unless you do a jeep tower conversion to a top shift.
And typically the 3 speed truck and the car top loader share the same first gear ratio.
Another option is a richmond four speed at $1400 or a tremac TKO500 or TKO600 around $2000.
I installed a TOD from an 87. It's a 3spd with OD as the 4th. I'd say just about perfect for the v8. What's wrong with the 3 spd?? unless you like to shift. I run out of first pretty quickly now, although I do have a warm 390. Unless you run alot of hills I don't see much of an advantage vs. the cost. New car bell $$ all the clutch stuff $$. Garbz is correct as usual with car 4spd $$$$$$$$ And there's quite a few to choose from big input small inputs ect..
Try toploaders.com for some more info, I have a 3spd in my fj40 . The only reason I will goto a 4spd is it has a non syncro first gear. PITA. and it will help the 100hp I6 get moving..
Didn't mean to rain on your parade, I say go for it if you have the $$ and desire.
actech I am using a pass 4 speed in my '66, presently it is a Toploader, but I used a BW T10 before that. The T10 is still available new from Richmond. The truck bell will work with the pass car trans, as well as the flywheel, clutch, TO bearing, etc. There are two things to watch for with the Toploader, input shaft diameter and input shaft length. The solution is easy, you just need to know what to ask for or do.
BTW, I really like the pass car transmissions in my truck.
