I have the Firestone M/T's on my truck at work and they work pretty good, don't get much winter weather here in TX, but they have worked well in the deeper mud and sand. Seem to wear pretty well too.
Yes I think A/T tire do better in snow than M/T. I had set of BFG ALL/TERRAIN T/A KO on my F-150 3 years go and they where greater Rugged Trail T/A are also good tires had them on my last truck my 06 SD they where E-load class tires LT.
AT's usually do better on ice and hard packed snow since they have more biting edges, but in actual snow they tend to pack full and become slicks. I ran my Toyo MTs last winter and was really happy with their performance in all conditions, so you may want to look at them too Troy. I like them a lot more than the Goodyear MT\R I had on my 99 F250.
I'll probably make it through one more winter with my stock tires, but after that I am looking at the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO or Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor tires to replace the stock BFGs. I also might consider the Pirelli Scorpion ATR only because it seems to have an excellent reputation.
Hopefully we get some good snow here on Long Island this winter - I've had the Superduty through 5 winters so far and can't wait to test these Silent Armor's... I'll be sure to report on them first chance I get...
I've gone through snow up to the grill with 265 Cooper A/T's (no longer made) and the original 235 General A/T's, and this thing goes through it's like nothing. Can't wait
How's the road noise with the Silent Armor's. I'm getting to where I need tires and those seem to be rated really high and equivalent in price to the Pirelli's I got such good wear from.
M/t's go better thru the snow they clean out way better but stopping is another matter plan ahead way ahead. I just had to go thru this and I went the BFG At route time will tell if I made the correct choice but the tire pricing on the 18" are just crazy I wanted something that would last. seeing that he has the 16" rim and the are more reasonably priced I would go with a MT with as much siping as I could find.
You might want to consider Cooper Discoverer ATR's. I have a set on the truck I bought and I really like them. I haven't had them in the snow yet, but they look like they should do well.
I'll have to add another vote to the BFG A/T's. I have been running them on my superdutys for the last 7-8 years. With religous rotation and good inflation I have been getting about 70k per set. Winter traction? yes...very good in my opinion. The only place they lack a little is DEEP snow (8+ inches). In that instance I would prefer M/T's. Living in central NY, I have the privledge of doing quite a bit of snow driving, as well as some off-road snow driving, and I have been very happy with them to this point.
Thanks a lot guys! Glad to hear some long miles on MT's!
We don't really get a lot of snow in the Chicago 'burbs - really.
We get about 2-4 "big ones" per year... so snow isn't really the issue.
The issue is - my stock SteelTeks are almost BALD - so any tire is better!
As far as the - AT vs. MT - it is purely about "looks" for me...
I like the looks of the 3 tires I mentioned & MOSTof all they are - E Rated!
=================================
I really wish I could get some CHEAP used tires!
