I have a 1971 Ford Ranger with a 1973 390 ...... headers and four barrel..... what kinda horsepower do i have around??? And i have some money to spend and i was wondering how to get this motor over four hundred horses....... any coments would be appreciated
depending on the compression (trucks got lower CR), I'd say about 300~325.
IF your compression is in the 8.5~9.5 range, and the rest of the engine is in good condition:
start with the oiling mods and a HV or HV/HP oil pump.
New cam and lifters in the 214~235 @ 50 range and 520~580 lift range.
Performer RPM intake or simular.
Block off exhaust crossover if the intake doesn't.
Port the heads or have the ported, remove hump in exhaust roof, grind down the valve guide that sticks into port, blend and smooth the bowl just below the valve, unshroud the valve.
If you haven't already, update the ign to electronic via Pertronix or some other kit.
