Changing out rotor and cap

I have a 97 E150, 6cyl with 150k miles on it. About time to change the wires, cap and rotor (did the plugs only last year). Is there anything special about putting in the rotor?, or is it just a swap out. Does the timing need to be checked (and if so how?). Haven't done a full tuneup myself since my '63 Impalla. Any good resources on repair procedures for this truck? Thanks (and sorry for the need for basic info).

The distributor rotor is keyed so it only goes on one way. It and the cap is an easy swap.

Unless you remove the distributor, the timing should be correct. The way the electronic ignition works, you only set the base ignition timing with the distributor and the PCM handles it after that.

A "tune-up" on a modern engine is more just replacing components and cleaning stuff. Replace the cap, rotor, wires and plugs. The PCV valve, fuel filter and air filter. If you want to go further, clean the throttle plate and EGR port. A large bottle of fuel injector cleaner is also a great idea. I have a Haynes and its OK.

If you want proceedures, the Haynes manual is reasonably well documented. The factory service manual is the best reference if you can find one.

Thanks - I've done all the items you mentioned, including cleaning the throttle body, just need to do the rotor, cap and wires this weekend.

Forgot to mention, the Haynes and Factory service manuals do have the proceedure for checking the base ignition timing. Its not a bad idea to check it periodically.
