Time to start all over... HELP

This morning I blem the 351m out of my 1978 f150. Plan is to swap a short block with a local machine shop.... but... while I've got it torn apart it's time to upgrade. I want a new intake manifold with a 4bbl carb. new ignition system with distributer, coil, etc. Also would like new headers with dual exuast. Also lookin into a new tranny or poss. rebuild. Goal is more horsepower but still practicle. I'm seeking any advice I can get on this. I have no idea where top start on the intake an 4bbl or the tranny or the ignition ****. Wer'e talkin i need to know where to get the stuff. whats ganna be bext on a budget. how everything will work together. EVERYTHING. All help is appreciated. Thanks!!!

Find a way to get the compression up, go with a mild cam and adjustable timing set, eldelbrock makes an intake and a 600 cfm carb will be good for your power level and fuel mileage. I will come up with some part numbers in the moring for you. If I happen to forget pm me and Ill make sure I get you what you need

THe first good thing to happen was your 351 to blow up. If you like that family of motor, have yours built as a 400. Otherwise, put in a 460. If your heart is set on a 315M/400, have it built as a 400, and check the forum index here, and post in the 335 series forum.

If I had the money, I would do a Cummins Turbo Diesel 12V, with the 24V 6 speed

There are alot of good parts places on the internet. I use summit mostly. I also check ebay with part numbers that I get from summit before I buy anything. Just watch for shipping and handling charges and make sure you are getting a deal. Its NOT ez to beat summitt. They have free, fast shipping but the have a handling charge of about $10 per order, so try and order as much at one time as you can. I have always gone with MSD ignition parts for aftermarket. They have alot of options and alot of plug-in options. Mallory makes good products too. I spent time working in a shop building motors for vintage race cars and putting together a motor isnt the easiest thing to do. You might want to look into some crate motors that have already been built. If you want to learn how to do it then go for it. Take it one step at a time though. If you get a short block thats built then the next step is heads. Someone posted before me about dart, brodix, trick flow and edlebrock. I rarely use edlebrock products but they do own a good chunk of the market and require less resurch. Brodix and dart would be my firs choice but alot of there heads come set up for race use. This means you have to get the heads bare and add the proper springs, shims etc. Good luck!

Check the 335 engine forum. First thing Id do is upgrade to at least a 400. Maybe even a 460. On the 400 I would increase the compression and get a decent cam and probably do some porting to the heads. A little work to the heads will go a long way. A 4bbl and headers would be good but Id stick with the original ignition. If the tranny shifts good and doesnt leak Id leave it alone.

Why not just keep the OEM Duraspark distributor and recurve it? I only put MSD boxes in my vehicles because I got one cheap for my truck and I wanted a rev limiter in my Cougar.

Both are running recurved stockies

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:
