Temp. Guage Won't Work

First let me say that my temp gauge has never worked, but I am finally getting around to replacing it. I just recently replaced the thermostat, water pump, and radiator to fix an over heating problem I was having. It seems to not want to over heat, but I would still like the temp guage to work so I know for sure if it is getting hot or not. I was wondering if anyone knew how to tell if it was an electrical problem in the wires or if it is the sensor that is screwed into the thermostat housing. I don't know too much about electrical stuff, so I'm not even sure if what I am asking is possible to know. My truck info is in my signature too. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

The sensor on most according to Chiltons is right on the tube leading up away from the thermostat housing.

This might interest you.

One wire, gauge sender. Two wires, ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) to ECM (Engine Control Module). They look similar, but have VERY different functions. Try replacing the gauge sender. The one in the T where the heater hose leaves to the heater core is usually the ECT (2-wire). The Engine Temp sensor is usually somewhere in a water jacket on the engine. On the 5.0, it's on the intake near #5 cylinder runner, but dunno where it is on the 300 I6.

If you want to see if your sending unit is bad, ground it then turn the key on, if it goes all the way past hot your wireing is good and its the sending unit..... Take a piece of wire preferably with aligator clips on it, slide the ruber piece off just enough to hook it on there, then ground the other end on something, then turn the key on but dont start it then look at your guage it should peg hot.....
