Surging/Stiction?

04 F250 6.0 with about 55k on it. Got 05' power elbow on it and no muff or cat. I think it surges a little. What is stiction? Searched and read a couple pages on stiction, but no defenition.

Seems to be after a cold start when I acclerate down the highway between 40-55mph. Does not seem to do it again when warm but it has a couple times. I can acclerate thru it, really dont seem to loose power, but i can deffentily hear it. Does not seem to be like alot of what I have researched and read about.

Is it surging, stiction, would HSS help?

Thanks for your time!!
John

Surging and stiction are not the same phenomena, stiction usually occurs in a cold engine and is characterized by rough running; white smoke; poor performance etc. HSS will likely help this condition; and regardless it's worth trying it because it's way cheaper than injectors. Also the latest inductive heating strategy seems to have made improvements on this front as well.

Surging is usuallly turbo related and is characterized by massive power fluctuations at highway speed. You will also be able to observe changes in boost pressure and EGTs when it occurs.

Are you letting your truck warm up before your get on the highway with it?

From your description I am more suspicious of stuck vanes in the turbo than I am of stiction, but you need to give some more detail about what the truck is doing. Just saying it sounds different and you can drive through it doesn't give much info for an arm chair diagnosis.

I let it idle for about 3 minutes, I dont get in and go unless I have a fire call, rare. Its has been in summer weather so fairly warm. It sits at home while I'm on the road all week.
Sounds like its not surging. The sounds seems to go rrrrmmm, normal, rrrmmm, seems to cycle like that over about a 2 second interval. Constant acceration, around 2k-2.5k rpms. i have no gages and no factory turbo gage.

Anything else please just ask me???

Thanks!

Oh yeah, fuel and air, and oil filters have less than 5k, I use Mobil 1 0-40syn. But have only had it for 10K.

mine done it a while back and i had the injector buzz done and it went away, but now after around 25k miles it has come back, it doesnt loose speed and it only does it when the gas pedal is being pushed but when i let off it stops so im guessing it has something to do with injectors or turbo vanes even though i just put a reman on last week!it seems like a spark plug fouling out(I know we dont have spark plugs!)

HSS seems to be a possible cheap fix for problem injectors, oil additive, search for it there is a HUGE thread. 20 pages.

Thanks

You may indeed be experiencing less severe symtoms of stiction; I'd say get the inductive heating flash done and try a bottle of HSS at your next oil change. Maybe get in the habit of giving your truck a few more minutes to warm up; I usually try to let my tranny temp indicator get up into the normal range before I take off (not necessarily in the middle, but above cold).

Good luck

Will I get a lot of flac about my exhaust and power elbow? I have the old elbow and can change that easy, but no cat and muff. Would they even look if just doing the flash?

Well, I can't say for sure, different dealers have differing opinions as to mods.... for the time it takes I'd probably put the elbow back on, I don't imagine they'd scrutinize the exhaust when doing a flash though.

Alright, will follow your advice with warm up and HSS. I was thinking a bout a new exhaust may do that and get a muff with ith then buy a cat, just for taking to Ford if I need to.

Thanks again!

On edit: I just re-read through the thread. Do I see that it is an oil additive? I will do a search.
Sorry, I missed the reply.
