I know the high-boys came lifted 4inches right? Now did that just consist of taller springs?? The mounts wouldnt be any different from the other trucks would they?
I'm pretty sure that's basically correct. The mounts are roughly the same, but the front springs are arched more. The rear had bigger blocks, and at least on the ones I have (crew cab 250 4x4s), the packs were bigger.
They all use 53" front springs. The hangers and shackles on the 77.5 to 79 were slightly longer but used neg arch springs. 73 to 77 250's had a slightly shorter hanger and shackle but had pos arch springs. (slight frame differences, not in width)
Yes you can install an early front spring on a late truck to obtain some lift, but unless it is a re-built spring, you will be installing a very old spring, so do not expect the ride to be so good.
Invest in a decent new front spring.
Rear springs are very different. 77.5 to 79 trucks use a 3" wide rear spring, and 73-77 trucks use a 2.5" wide spring.
2.5 for the rear??? I just measured mine and my fronts are 3 in but the rear is 2 1/4. Its a 77 by the way. Any come with this or was this added after the fact?
