thorn's

Yes I no tires have been beat to death but i cant find the answers I'm lookin for, and yes I did use the search button. I plan on adding a 2.5 inch leveling kit and 1 inch blocks to my truck, and when I get new tires Im going to get a more agressive looking tire. I realy like the looks of the thornbirds but are they realy as bad of a tire as the 4x4 section says they are? Note this though I will be using them fore mostly on road with the occasional off road to rescue some 1.
They look like a street freindly tire except for the lugs.

here are my questions
1. How noisy are they?
2. How's the on road handling?
3. how long do they last?

If you no of any other tires that look like thorns plz chime in.

Once again I will use them for almost all street and looks is a big factor.

(moderators plz do not move to 4x4 section thanks )

I've heard good and bad about the thornbirds. I've run the TSL Radials and I've had a good experience with them. The road noise is kinda loud but I was actually able to run mine to almost 20k. Have you checked out the TRXUS mud terrains?

thornbirds suck big time on pavement...and they truly aren't that good offroad either. they tend to gum up and still leave you stuck...on pavement they wear out extremely quickly...also, the lugs make alot, alot of noise on the pavement

a nice street friendly tire that looks aggressive and works offroad is the Toyo M/T...also, I suggest the Firestone Destination M/T. both tires are fairly quiet on the raod for mudders and they have a really rugged appearance

The thornbirds do suck.
1 Noise is loud. Just as loud as a TSL.
2 On road, I've heard bad things, real rough, but can't imagine that bad.
3 I've heard of someone getting mid 30s out of them, but I know a few people that barley got close to 30k miles. Some only 20K.
The price isn't great, so there isn't anything other than looks to attract anyone to this tire.

Another super swamper that might work would be the SSR. It has side wall design for strength, and looks, you can get 30K miles out of them(I know someone that got 40K), they perform great off road, they aren't as loud as a TSl or turdbird, and they are basically the same price.

I wouldn't by a Destination, only because of the price. I'd get some Timberline daytons be for them, and some Baja wide track M/Ts before them. They are all the same tire, just price gets lower.

I'm about to get some Hankook M/Ts this week. They are a nice looking tire, I've heard good things about them in the mud(no TSL), but BFG M/T quality, should get close to same mileage out of them as BFG, but I'm getting them out the door for $700.

I've heard good things about the Hankook M/T's as well. If you shop around, you can get the Destinations for $700 or less. I paid $600 for 4 33x12.5x15...I just wish the Timberline or Destination (basically is same tire, but "different" manufacturer) came in a 35" tire. they only make a 33" or smaller unfortunately

I worked for a firestone dealer and they also had timberlines, and I couldn't get in a set of 285/70R17s for less than $900. It was costing people $1,100 to put a set on.

You are right, they are cheaper for the 15" rims and not to bad for the 16" rims, but 17s are stupid, and they don't make them for 18s.

I think I'm going to like the Hankooks.(32x11R17s). I'll let ya'll know what I think when I get them, and see what ya'll think of them(should be in a week).

I didnt mind my thornbirds, but definetly for the cost you could find something better. I got mine cheap, used with very little wear. My best friend and I have found our 35 boggers to balance out and run more evenly than the thornbirds, although a bit louder. TOYOS MTs are great and look agressive, but pricey. Height and width affect noise, handling, and wear no matter what the brand, so try find someone running not only the same tire, but size you want as well and ask how they run.

I like the cooper Discoverer STT's. Had a set on my durango, loved them. nice hum not slappy, on the street, not loud though. Factory siping, good in the rain, no hydroplaning, Big lug design, went through snow and mud like nobody's business. Off road traction out the whazzoo. Decent priced, bigger sizes are more, I got my set for 560, mounted and balanced.

As far as tread wear, 19/32 new, 11K later, worst one was 14/32.

Awesome tire IMHO.

The Toyo's are some nice tires, but the cooper STTs are identical, and a little cheaper.
IF money wasn't that big of an option, I might of gone with either of these.

Money is a very factor for me, I was thinking that since no one likes the thornbirds I could get them real cheap. Whats a mud tire that last a long time? I heard that ground hawgs (I think is the name) last a very long time but I havent found any. I dono the main reason I was wanting a mud tire was for the agresive look, But I may just get a bigger all season type tire.

go to Discount Tire or Les Schwab if your in the northwest. They have "off" brands that are good tires and at decent prices.

The ground hawgs are some decent mud tires, and they wear like IRON. They'd still have plenty of thread when they start dry rotting in 10 years no matter how many miles you put to them, but they don't make tires for 17" rims. That's the smallest rim that'll fit on these trucks.

Check into the super swamper SSR. It's a very good tire.

I gotta agree with you on the Super Swampers. they're just a wee bit loud

I'm pretty sure you've got discount tires around. I've seen them in Dallas

Just curious, are these tires going on the truck in your gallery? 4.6 2WD 3.55s ? A mud tire probably isnt the best choice in my opinion. they generally wear faster and can rob more power which the 4.6 with 3.55s does not need. And which ever tire you decide on, dont stray too far from stock size unless you plan on re-gearing otherwise It'll be a dog ( a fat lazy dog ).
