93 Explorer shift problem

93 Explorer shift problem
I just bought a 93 Explorer and it doesn't shift right. If I start out in drive, in order to get it in second I have to manually put it in second, same thing for drive. Do these have a modulator valve?

There is a vacuum modulator. When that goes bad, the engine starts burning transmission fluid. Have you checked the fluid level? When is the last time the tranny fluid was changed?

ya, i checked the tranny fluid when i bought it, and it looked carmel color and full. It probably was never changed. I told the used car dealer I bought it from he needs to change the fluid before I keep it and he said that his local transmission shop recommended he put in some crap called "slip shift" and run it for 100 miles to free up some gummed up spools, ***** ect in the valve body. I actually know this local trans shop and the owner said he's full of you know what, he simply just said there is internal problems and the car lot didn't want to spend the money to let him drop the pan and check it out. I'll crawl under there and see if I can find that modulator valve. I'm actually a forklift service manager and have been a mechanic for 20 years, but I'm not too educated on cars 1984ish and newer!
