i know a guy that uses the power steering pump to operate a bale spike on his bumper. you might be able to do something similar. i'd say the pump couldn't handle it, but it can handle a big round bale of hay, so who knows.
we have had round bales in the 1500 to 2000 lb range, not sure what the payload of his F150 is, but I am guessing that 2000lb would be a lot of weight in the bed. how much it can lift also depends on how the actualy hoist is designed, but I am pretty sure that you will be reaching the payload capacity of a f150 before you reach the capacity of the hoist.
I would just use an electric pump to run it, or if he has a pto output on his transfer case, he could run a hydraulic pump on that, but now I am starting to over think it
