I have a 93 Bronco with a 5.8. It runs fine most of the time. Once in a while it leaves me stranded at start up and I don't know why. Usually my truck will display the check engine light while running or with the ignition on, it always has and it has always run fine. The problem occurs only sometimes when the ignition is turned on. You don't hear the fuel pump start up or it will engage for about a half second instead of a whole second or two and quit. When this happens, I dont hear the pump engage but I do hear a click under the hood. The battery light and all other gauges (with the exception of the check engine light) power up and the engine will turn over fine but won't start due to lack of fuel. After waiting a while sometimes for an hour or more, the fuel pump and the check engine light come on simultaneously and it starts right up. Fuel or electrical, any suggestions?
Check your electical connections on the pump, the fuse, and the relay. You should see what codes your engine light will give you too. If it stays on something is wrong. I am going to assume your pump has recently started to do this. If so it may be going bad.
It has done it for a couple of years. It just went from once every couple of months to once or twice a week. I have checked all the fuses, and even replaced them in the fuse box and in the one under the hood. I also removed the relays and cleaned the prongs which had only slight discoloration and no real corrosion. If it was a fuse wouldn't it never start until it was replaced? This is an intermitten problem.
Go over every ground connection in the truck, Start at the battery clean the terminal, then follow the wire clean the terminals with sandpaper, clean the frame or motor with a dremel or drill mounted with a wire brush, coat with dielectric grease and reconnect.
Go over all of them from front to rear the tiny ones that connect to body panels, or the big ones that tie the motor to the frame to the battery are just as important. Check under the dash too, even the one for the cap on the ignition coil clean and dielectric grease it too!!
