O.k. I know that this has been covered a bit before on here but I'm gonna ask it again. I have the opertunity to get a running 351W it is Carbed, My current 302 leaks oil and burns oil, I was going to get another 302 and rebuild it but I can't pass up a FREE 351W so my question is:
Can I rebuild the 351W as an EFI? I have no experience in rebuilding motors this will be my first and I was going to make it a winter garage project. I want to rebuild it so in the spring I can pull the tired out 302 and just plug in the 351W and have no worries.
If anyone has experience with this or knows a site or magazine or book that can assist in this please help me out.
I think you can. So long as all your sensor will plug into the block. You should have to get another intake manifold. I would suggest calling summit or jegs.
Well, depending on the year of you truck, you EEC wont work. If it's equiped with SD rather than MAF, the computer will either A) need re-flashed or B) Replaced. SD works on precise inputs. CID being one of the biggest ones and CFM through heads and intake manifold. You'll also need a different cam that the computer will at least somewhat like. I'm getting ready to do a simular swap on my 88' 150 but mine will be a 408 stroker on a lopey cam with a custom EEC tune. Hope thats somewhat helpful.
This will work with a MAF SEFI setup or a reflashed ECU. You will also need a 351 intake, a wider fuel rail (you can modify your 302 rail) and wider Y pipe.
My question now is, is it worth the work getting a 351W carbed engine ready to drop in my truck or should I just build up a strong 302 so I can just drop it in hassle free? What would be the advantages of the 351 over the 302? and how many horses can I squeeze out of the 302 and still keep it reliable?
