Looking at a 2000

I am seriously looking at a 2000 powerstroke. I was looking for some input on the truck. The color is a dark blue, not sure the true name, maybe midnight blue? It is a four door, short bed, fx4, 8in fabtech lift, 38's, 20's. He has 4" exhaust, aem rai and a crappy hypertech programmer. He is saying he has changed the trans with a new ford trans in the past year. He said he has a new powersteering pump in it but I just test drove it and there is definately something wrong with the power steering. The trans feels good and the motor sounds good and feels good. He has the tube that is usually in the intake ran out by the bottom of the engine and it smokes at idle. I am not sure if it is supposed to do that? It has 160k on it and he has not changed the water pump or cam position sensor once. He is asking 15,500 for it, it is in ok shape, he did not take great care of it. How does that sound for price? any help would be appreciated.

the tube is a ccv mod for blow by, htose are crankcase gases escaping though the vent tube. that is ok.

Price sounds ok with out looking at it, get ready to change cam sensor if you buy it, also some others will probably chime in and tell ya what else you might want to look at. What is the power steering act like?? is it stiff or loose, how are the ball joints on the front end? does the trans look new? how is the fluid in the trans.

FX4 debuted in 2003 so either its not a 2000 or its not an fx4. He probably just upgraded the stickers. The price seems a little high, but it all depends on where you are located. DId it have any blowby?

Thanks for the response. Ya the cps was one of the first things I asked him, but there are only like 90 bucks so thats not to bad. The power steering was acting like it didnt have fluid or was low on fluid. It did not want to turn the tires without moving the truck. He said He had the ball joints looked at but I think they are going bad because the truck wants to wander a little on the road. The trans does not look new but after about a year being in the truck I dunno how new it should look. All of the fluids looked good, engine, trans, and coolant. Also no rust since we live in south louisiana.

Ya I was wondering about the fx4 bc I didnt believe they made that in 2000 either. But he does have extendable mirrors with lights. I did no see any blowby just some smoke at idle after the test drive.

that "smoke" is actually oil vapor and steam from the engine oil. was it like a small roll out of the pipe or was it blowing heavily? sounds like its priced a little high. as for the power steering have a shop look at it brfore you buy it, may just need to have the air bled out of the system.

Honestly, I say go home and be happy! I truck running 38's has worn and abused nearly everything, especially when not maintained well. I have run up to 37's-it's hard on trucks. Powersteering will never work correct w/ those tires unless you get a ram assist ($1500) Has the coolant ever been changed? I would not touch the truck. You will be money ahead by buying a stock truck and modifying it the way you want where it will be done right. He is probably unloading the truck as it is time to repair everything and put big money back into the rig. Just my honest opinion. Good Luck.

Honestly if it wasnt a superduty, then I would not even consider it on 38's. I also had a 99 on 38's with no problems. Ya a ram assist would be nice but I was just going to do crossover steering. Coolant looks good. Thanks for the opinion, I am trying to weigh out the options.
