decided to run a test last week on my wifes new expedition. took out the k/n put back in the stock filter. drove 400 plus miles. did some hammer down on this roadtrip and did notice the lack of acceleration. but did notice no real change in milage. did same on her 98 cobra. ran it up to 6500 couple of times on hot engine. no more cel.
so im mixed....b/t way. the harley davidson hi flow system the sell under the h/d logo i am guessing is a k/n. sure looks like one. been using it for 6 yrs. no problem. also no problem on 97 460. 111 k miles. 10 yrs.

Oil Bath Filters have been used for years on large industrial/ marine diesel engines with no problems since the first diesel engines.

my buddy has a 99 ranger with 130k and i have a 96 with 158k we've had no problems. both of us both have the 3.0L v6. i've had a K&N in my 96 since 58k, i clean it every time i change my oil.

my buddy uses a K&N on his semi to help out with fuel mileage and hansn't had problem yet, hes got a million miles on his truck(96 Areo Max with a Cummings)

I put one on my truck(KN) and found there was no difference in fuel mileage but the engine did seem to breathe easier.

Ok Thanks! The (KN) air filter I installed cause my engine to ping.I had no idea an air filter could cause that until after I posted my problem on this site.Thing is ,If a higher brand name product is not only more expensive but also causing problems,I'd be better off with the cheaper one.

Well, I washed the filter, cleaned my Mass/air flow sensor, put the filter back in and the problem immediately went away. The Maf is only about 3 months old.

Well I bought a KN filter for my Malibu. The first trip i took with it the mileage jumped up by like 4 miles. This brought my mileage up to 32 mpg doing 80mph down the interstate. i normally got like 28 the first 2 months i owned it. now i only get 25 on the interstate doing 80. Theres alot of factors but when i first put that filter in you could notice the change.

I personally think that a K&N filter is by far the more expensive option ($ for filter and constantly buying rechage kits $$$$$) i have ran them in the past and had a good experience but if you think they are convinient your crazy i felt like i was always recharging the thing to keep air flow up and gas mileage up as well . so to finish my post i believe in the performance and ability to filter but you have to go through a lot of work to benefit from them and if you don't they can cause damage to engine for sure

But in all seriousness, I do drive on back country roads, a lot of dusty gravel ones, go mudding a little, etc. I haven't had a problem yet and I've had it on since spring.

There have been people that complain about dirty although I haven't had any problems as of yet. They do make a prefilter that will slip over then end of the filter which will trap even more dirt. You may want to think about that "upgrade" to the k&n.

All in all it was basically a mod done for looks. I can't really hear the sound over my glasspack, although I heard it sounds nice (LOL). Gl!
funny, that looks just like mine .....

Here's a good study on the K&N, among others....

http://duramax-diesel.com/spicer/index.htm

Sorry about the fact that they're testing GM instead of Ford, but the data tells a lot.

guess ill put my 2 cents in, i run a K&N filter on my honda 400ex atv, i had to rejet, i was pulling wheelies in third gear by just slapping the throttle, i could barely get it up in 2nd gear without the K&N filter and yes the jettin helped to of course it wouldnt have ran without the new jets, of course thats not a V8 engine but it does show proof that a K&N filter produces more power, i had a K&N filter in my 1992 F150 with a 5.0, just the filter itself helped some, but i decided to step it up to a one of their kits, its a well made kit and i had it installed in about 30 minutes, and ill tell you that filter sucks air, its noticably louder then stock by a mile, i can definatly tell a increase in performance and in the sound of my exhaust, i have straight pipes with glasspacks and i dont know if its just me but it sounds a little more deeper growl to it. About the dust issue i havent noticed and dust what so ever, i always run my finger on the inside of the filter and ever have i had any dust. You can also buy a filter outerwear, i live in a dusty area, i dont use an outerwear on my pickup but i do on my fourwheeler for sand dunes in oklahoma, i have run my filter on my fourwheeler at the dunes and i didnt have even a piece of that fine fine fine sand on the inside of my filter. Honestly dont worry about the dust issue. Make sure you follow the directions on how to clean the air filter, clean it right and it will run like it did out of the box, if your like my you dont always like to look at the directions lol, but thats us guys you know, we have all done it . K&N has my vote.

I only quoted this because I wanted to say NICE truck friend. In 2 to 3 hundred years when I can retire, I am gonna fix up a truck like that. Gotta love the 351 Windsor. Best engine made in my estimation! Sorry I meen not, to jump this thread.
