Im rebuilding a 9" and im up to setting up the center section, i printed out the tech article and i undestand the process. My question is does anyine have/ know the spec torque specs, pinion preload specs and backlash specs, I do not have a service manual that contains the 9". Thanx for any info or help
I just rebuilt a 9-inch a few months ago and did loko through the FTE article, but there were some things in it I think were wrong...IIRC, it listed new bearing preload less than old bearings, every other rear I've was opposite...i/e more preload on new bearings.
Also, I think the backlash spec given was incorrect too.
FWIW, I set mine up (new bearings) for 12 in/lbs on the pinion, and .005 on backlash, I forget the numbers I used for carrier preload, but what I did was assume that after things wee set up, I need .005 on both side, so I took my thread gauge and measured the TPI's for the adjusters, and did some quasi-calcs to come up with how much further to rotate the adjusting "nuts" on the carrier bearings. I could measure a spare adjusting nut again, if you need the info.
I'm all for doing your own rear end gears. I did a set a while back and as careful as I thought I was putting it together, something went wrong after a few weeks of driving. My last rear end gears I bought a different ring and pinion for it. This time I took it to the rearend shop and they put it together for me for about $100. Sometimes, it's not worth messing with it. For the $100 I put in, I saved time and having to take it all apart again. If you feel confident in how to do it. I say go for it. If your not sure, and want to experiment in putting one together. I'd suggest doing it with someone who has prior experience putting them together. Just in case!... Good luck.
This is a great source for Rear End Tech. 9"/Dana/12 Bolt etc. It's well done and the best part is you can always back up and look it over again if you don 't get it the first time.
Don't get me wrong here fellas, the DVD is great and doing it yourself is right down my alley, but how many times do you have to pull apart and put a 3rd member back together? I figure once... hopefully. As much as I would love to learn how to put one together correctly, for me it was easier to have a pro do it for me the correct way. Another way to go is purchase a whole 3rd member already put together. Sometimes you find great deals at swap meets. I have two members with different gear ratios ready to go. I think I paid $80 for them at a junk yard.
