Im having a bad vibration somewhere on my truck seems to be located around and near the clutch....Anybody have any ideas and what I should check to see what may be causing that?
I haven't checked to see if there is a vibration or driveshaft forum, so I hope I'm not messing up by responding here.
One of the most, if not THE most, difficult thing to solve over the internet is a vibration. I have lots of experience solving vibration problems, but I have to have my hands on the vehicle to do it.
That said, since your gut is telling you that it is coming from the clutch area, then that means that this is where the vibration is making it's way through to you. It could be anywhere, but is being transferred to the passenger compartment in that area. SOoo.. let's think about this. Since it feels like it's in that area, it is probably being transferred at the transmission mount.
Another thing to consider is the speed or frequency of the vibration. Does it feel as if it is at engine speed, driveshaft speed or wheel speed? For helping over the internet, this is probably the one question that you could answer that would be most helpful.
If it's wheel speed, which is not likely since you think that it's coming from the clutch area, then you have a wheel/tire problem which is probably the source of more than 90% of vibration complaints anyway.
If it's engine speed, then it will follow the engine speed as you change gears. Sometimes, with a manual transmission, you can determine whether it is engine related or driveshaft related by getting the vehicle up to speed where you feel the vibration, then let off the gas and push the clutch then reengage it. This will reposition the clutch disc in its relationship with the pressure plate/flywheel and change the vibration.
If the vibration is at driveshaft speed and is a steady vibration, then it would be worth examining the u-joints, or maybe even having the driveshaft spun at the driveshaft shop to check for imbalance or other sources of vibration, but this would only be if you strongly suspect the driveshaft.
Well as I said, it's very difficult to troubleshoot vibrations over the internet, but hopefully this will help in some small way.
If the vibration is only at idle, it is probably an engine miss. What happens if you press slightly on the clutch, or even press the clutch pedal all the way? Does the "vibration" change at all?
