Hey all, I just had a quick question about towing performance with the Agg Tow tune from Spartan. I used it earlier this week and all I had on was a car trailer and a hatchback jetta. Not a big load at all, I did have to pull some decently steep grades and my Power PDA threw the oil temp light, after I switched the gauges around on it I saw the oil temp had hit 228, is this normal or not?
That's not an unreasonable engine oil temp if your coolant temp was 205-215. If your coolant temp was still down at the 180-190 level and the oil temp was 230 you may have an obstructed oil cooler.
If I remember correctly the Oil measures somewhere between 10 -15 degrees hotter than coolant temp. Since the fan cycles between 210-220 coolant temp, that would make the PDA scream all the time on a hard climb. I called Banks when I first got mine, and they told me to raise the oil temp alert to 235 deg. Kinda funny that even at 235 the idiot gauge doesn't even move. ~Brad
Engine Oil Temperature will run somewhat hotter under load than than ECT. All of our files will begin to defuel at a temperature caution point of 254 degrees; with an emergency fuel shutdown at 282. You were still within perfectly safe parameters.
As the others have said, the oil temperature you saw should not be a problem. FMC says that the EOT should be no more than 20F degrees warmer than the ECT. If the EOT is more than 20F warmer than the ECT then this indicates a problem with the EOC as 04Xcursion said. Compare your ECT & EOT to make sure they are within 20F of each other.
IIRC with factory stock programming defuel occurrs at ECT of 227F, EOT of 254F.
