Does anyone know of a special tool (I'm guessing it's in the form of a socket) to remove the dash **** retaining nuts so one can service the switch/control cable and/or dash?

Try a wide-blade screwdriver...with a steady hand. You dont want to slip and cut your hand or scratch the dash. I have also made such tools from things like a motorcycle spark plug socket...these are not the hardened chrome type.
