I have been wanting to get my bronco painted since I got it because of the peeling clear coat and have not been able to get a a solid answer as how much it was going to cost me.
I took it down to my local ford dealer for the recall on the cruise control and while I was there I went and talked to the paint manager and we got talking about the problems ford has with there paint and he came out and looked at my truck and he couldn't believe how clean my truck was for the year and we BS's for almost 1 hr.
So heres what there going to do Remove all trim ,bumpers and door locks and handles, strip the paint down and repair the dent it has by the pass side tail light repair the common stress cracks on the roof at the end of the gutters.I am getting it painted the same factory colors and pin stripes and a good clear coat.
While I was there I noticed That I know two of the guys that work there in the body shop one is some kind of manager and the other is a tech.
So the manager is going to give me a good deal and all and all it is going to cost me $2845.00.
What do you guys think good deal or not,I thought it would cost almost double that since some of the people I talked to said like $3500.00 just for paint not including bodywork and a complete tear down and strip.
I just got my bronco back from the bodyshop at my local dealer and I might be sorry I let them do the paint work.
They have had my truck for 2 weeks and I was away on vaca said it would be waiting for me when I get back, well it wasn't done but I didn't mind because I still have my pickup to drive.
On thursday my front steel pass side brake line on my truck blew out and I had no way to fix it so off to the shop it goes,I call the paint manager who told me my bronco would be done on wed as they were putting it back together and doing the final buffing and waiting for the pinstriping guy to show up,well he tells me my truck is still being put back together and is in the same condition it was on tuesday when I first called to check on it but assured me it would be done on Friday and they would send a car for me and they did.
The first thing I did when the shuttle dropped me off at the bodyshop is go over and look at my bronco(it was in the parking lot) and from a distance it looks great but as soon as I get to it I start seeing all kinds of screwups there is a bunch of gobbely goop builtup on the whole edge of the pass side door and chips out of the new paint on the pass side by the tail light,as I rounded the front of the truck I notice the corner of the hood is all messed up missing paint and it looks like they put masking tape on it when the paint wasn't dry so I get to the driverside door and all around the door handle the are a ton of deep scrapes and gouges down to metal and I'm like WTF is this so at this point I am really getting Po'ed I go and get the paint manager and he could tell by the look on my face that I wasn't happy,so we go out to the truck and he can't believe all the problems in the paint(We found alot more wrong after walking around it).
Now he tells me to take the truck and write all the things I find wrong with it down and bring it back and he will take care of it.
I can't list all the things I found wrong with it as the list would be a lot longer then what I already posted and I can't beleive a dealer painted it, it is worse then a maco paint job.I like the manager and just hope they will get it right,I fear they will have to paint the whole truck again and it will take a couple of more weeks to get it back.Sorry for the long post had to tell someone about it .
Like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.
I just took my Bronco into the body shop yesterday for paint. I pretty much sanded it to bare metal, no rust issues at all and a couple spots they need to fix before paint. I also sprayed it with a lacquer based primer so it needs a sealer before paint. After all my work the total cost is 5K. I had quotes as high as 8K and as low as 3K.
Well the paint manager is pretty embarassed about the whole thing and assures me that it will be 100% right before I get it back,he knows how much of a fanatic I am about my Bronco and knows how I want it to be,we will see.
Most of what I saw is not bad and most of the damage besides the pass side door was done by who ever put i back together and who ever was near it with tools.
He has offered to install new door handles and install my new speakers in the doors at no charge for the trouble,They also replaced the rear window wiper/seal at no extra charge so I think he will make sure It is right if not he will get tired of seeing me.

wow that sounds horrible. you have to be real careful who you have do paint work. i just had my 99 grand cherokee rear bumper replaced and painted(limited) and i got there and it was the wrong color! the jeep is pewter and the bumper was silver. worst thing is they blended it in to the rear 1/4 and door so it looked bad. it was an insurance job and they had a rookie do it. I told them it wasnt acceptable and they fixed it and had it back the next day matching. They also offer a lifetime guarantee on workmanship and fit/finish while i own the vehicle. I can only imagine what would have happened if i went to a non reputable dealer.
Speaking as a Bronco owner and a fanatic about it being right I am also a painter and I have to tell you matching colores these days even doing computer matches ias very difficult to do. Silver still remains the hardest color to matxch because it is all metallic.
There are too many veriances to deal with in paint mix, pressure, gun used and lighting.
I work for an RV dealer and have to match everything from some kind of white which is actually jell coat to some of the class A motorhomes you see with all the different colores.
If you have a dealer willing to do all that work for that price you better take him out afterwards and buy him a drink or something cause that is cheap.

i've worked in a bodyshop since i was 16 and that sounds like a good deal.make sure they clean it up real good after buffing it if needed because the compounds they use get dry and hard in door jams and little cracks and anywhere else it can get and its a pain in the butt to clean up after it dries.i have a 1989 bronco with 190,ooo miles on it, it needs a perty good bit of work but push button 4x4 works perfect and brackes have been redone and 2 new flow masters and 4 real good 31/10.50/15 tires no real rust and new rear bumper ,motor runs real good no smoke(small oil leak)when i say work ,it needs some body work, somebody wrecked it and didn't do a very good job.i'm only asking $2200 for it.

the silver looked great! just my jeep isnt silver its pewter. Im glad the painter took care of it and stood behind their work for me. this is the reason we went to them. He said they had a novice painter do the job and he tried mixing all these things to make the color right. the guy who go it right used the paint code with no tinting and it was spot on(which is odd for a metallic on a 9 year old vehicle).
When i paint my bronco im actually going to try the roll on method using rustoleum pro and mineral spirits.
glen, i hope things work out for you with the dealer.
silver isn't that bad if you over thin you paint and blend it really well and pewter is the same way it will sometimes look splochy(i guess thats how you spell that)if its not blended well.you have to make sure the clear is really (ice water clear)some brands of clear have very slight yellow look.PPG has the best i have ever seen.thats my 2 cents worth others may think differant, and thats fine too.
Well as of today it has been three weeks since I returned my bronco to the body shop and it is supposed to be done this morning,I spoke with the manager yesterday and he said he is very proud of the way it came out and said I will be to(we will see). When I dropped it off he found a lot more wrong with the paint then I did and told me they were going to start all over from scratch and restrip it and have his head painter do it .I think this thing is going to be nice this time just so they can save face, they did a lot of extra things to make it up to me.I hope the weather will hold out so I can get some good pics of it and post them.Wish me Luck!
I got it back and all I can say is wow,it is a fine looking machine. They really did a great job this time. They went as far as to pull all the glass out of it,did all the jambs installed new door handles and in three months will do a complete detail and glazing free of charge.Mike the paint manager is a class act and knew what I wanted and went beyond that.I will try and get some pics this weekend but it is going to be pretty nasty out.Feels good to have my truck back.
I know its been about six months but my Bronco is done with the body shop and paint and I don't think I will ever get another car or truck painted again LOL, I would never recomend the dealer that painted my bronco to anyone because of how many screw ups and return trips to get this truck looking the way it does, yes they kept doing extra things for no charge but it got to be a pain to keep picking it apart. So not only is it painted it got all new window felts/wipers including tailgate new door handles new door switch and the jams all painted.I just put the new grill and headlights in and clear turn signal lens.I get people telling me how nice it is all the time now and one of my best friends thought I got a new truck (not a car guy) I still need to do a few more things I have a stainless rod holder for the front to mount and a set of window vent shades to put on and then get the rest of my sound system put in. I took a few pics but need to get some better shots.
