M5OD or the ZF
OK, to get things rolling, I have a 1990 f150 with the 4.9l I6, 4x4 with a 5spd. lets just put it this way i completey fried my tranny. this weekend we are pulling it and putting one that ill be picking up from my local t4ruck dismantlers.
Now the question is im not sure if i have the M5OD or the ZF. Any way for me to tell, and also at the junk yard i can ethier get an M5 or the ZF, any paticular way i should go on that?
Thanks agian from a young greasemonkey.

The ZF is basically a three speed with a granny gear and an overdrive. It's supposed to be stronger than the Mazda tranny, so if you do any towing, etc. the ZF is probably your best bet. Plus, a granny gear is nice if you do much off-roading.
Either way, I'd recommend having a tranny shop check the donor tranny out and replace the seals at the very least.
BTW, if you do go that way the ZF is pretty tall - a lot taller than the T-18 I took out of the Bronco. You may want to get the floor hatch that goes over the shifter from the donor truck as well. I had to grab one from a 2WD ZF truck and cut a hole for the transfer case shifter.
Also, confirm that the rear mounts are in the same place as your old tranny. You may have to get a new crossmember. Measure the total length of both trannies too, you may need to have the drive shafts shortened/lengthened as well.
