Thumping when using tranny to slow down going down hill
2004 Explorer Limited 4X4 V6 automatic
Going down hill instead of using brakes I take it out of OD or down shift to a lower gear. A loud thumping sounds like I am running over those reflectors you find along the side of the road. Sometimes when I am on flat ground and downshift to slow down it does the same thing.
Any ideas?
Steve
I remember reading about a similar issue from some time ago that was traced to the 4X4 module on a Gen 3. Sorry, I don't remember much about that thread except the description of driving over roadway reflectors was the same as yours. Try pulling the fuse or disconnecting that module temporarily to see if it stops the thumping. Remember to unhook the battery ground cable first if you decide to pull the connectors on the module. Let us know.
