I so often think that such accusations are not just the failings of the employee, but instead highlight the failure of management's leadership. FarmForward's post is a good example.
On some level, I certainly agree. However, when the same employee has been counseled on the same issue repeatedly and simply refuses to comply...there isn't much left for management to do.
I suppose some back story could be necessary...once upon a time I was a production supervisor at a small wire mill. Small means 5 to 10 employees max. We had several different operations going on...each of which required special hand tools that the company provided and were to be left "accessible" to all in case of a sick day or an emergency production change, etc.
One particular guy made a game of hiding the tools he was assigned when he knew that he'd be out the next day...that way no one else could do his job in his absence. After about the third time I had to go off site to purchase MORE hand tools, I let the guy go....
