U - joints - anyone else have a problem with these ?
Wow, here i am - new drivetrain but ... the u joint on it is faulty .... i got a new one, but for the life of me i can't get the old u joint off! are there any tips you have for someone who doesn't have a U - joint tool?
Yep - go to Autozone and rent one. Having the right tools makes the job 100 times easier. If they don't know what one is, rent a ball joint press. It can be used for either purpose.
i used a cutoff wheel on a 4 inch grinder to get mine out cause caps were frozen to old joint took a whole 2 min to cut off just did one side so i could get it out hammer and socket works well also
Well i'm pretty poor - have no extra funds to spend on anything or i would of tried to take it in to get repaired =[ ... is there a way to remove it without one ?
Remove the retaining clips and get a socket that is the same diameter as the u-joint (must be smaller than the hole in the ear that the u-joint is pressed into). Set the driveshaft on something hard and ring shaped, just bigger than the diameter of the u-joint, so that you can place the socket on the top of the joint and whack it with a hammer a few times. The idea is for the hole under the u-joint/driveshaft to be just big enough that the other bearing cap can fall through it but the driveshaft is still supported (does any of this make sense?) If you don't have something hard and ring shaped you can at least try to break the joint loose by using a flat surface under it, but you're only gonna get about 1/2 or 3/4 of a CM of movement (until the bearing cap hits the table).
Anywho, you do that until it falls through, then pull the bearing cap off the end of the u-joint that is now OUTSIDE of the shaft (bottom one) then angle the u-joint out and it'll pull right out.

Haha! How strange that he just happened to suggest that...
What part of sac are you from though? Depending on where you live the price of gas to drive to him would probably cost more than just renting/buying the tool
I used my bench vise (pretty large one) with two appropriately-sized sockets--one as a "presser" and one as a "receiver". This was after beating the snot out of them with a BFH. It pushed the vise to its limits, but it worked. Next time I have to do u-joints, I'll probably just go buy a press (new project, new tool...)
If you drive up here, I'll help you change it. They're really easy to do. It's about a 20 minute job. I'd actually rather do that than lend my MAC ball joint press out. I bought it on ebay a few years ago for $80. They sell for a lot more than that new.
Just do as skandocious said above with a socket and hammer spray the caps with pb blaster let sit a few then knock them out with the socket and hammer that's how i have always done them never had a problem good luck
well send me an email to aphexmonster@gmail.com and if i can contact you today i would deffinitely like to get that off. i dont know if i can do the auto zone thing, all they have are ball joint pressers and i'm not 100% sure on how to use those to get it off. i have an idea with the recieving pushing socket idea i just hope it works. please get a hold of me soon =] thanks
