Hey guys, I know nothing about Fords and am in need of some help.
I own a '62 Buick, I want to put both a posi and lower gears in but there is no aftermarket support for my 9 3/8" rear (you probably see where this is going). Well, the entire axle is basically a knock off of the Ford 9" and 9 1/2". I'm not sure if it would work but I'd like to pick up a 9 1/2" pumpkin and at least see if it would work. Problem is, I haven't been able to determine what years this axle came in. Also, is there anything else about a truck that would determine if it came with the 9 1/2"? Thanks for the info!
About a million different cars and trucks came with the Ford 9". As far as I know, GM wheels won't interchange with Ford wheels, so you should have some idea of how you'll deal with that problem. I also don't know anything about getting a conversion joint (if you need one) to go from a GM driveshaft to a Ford axle. If the third members interchange, you won't have to worry about that.
BTW - all Ford 9" axles are called that. Some have different ring gear diameters, so make sure you know what you're buying. If you ask a junkyard for a Ford 9 1/2" axle, the guy is going to look at you awful funny.
The Ford 9" axle came out in the 60's and was used up until 1985 or so in some applications. They were used in cars, trucks, vans, you name it. Any junkyard should have a pile of axles and third members. Just watch out for the Ford 8" axle, they look similar.
Sorry, should have been more specific. What years came with the 9" with a 9 3/8" ring gear? Over the last half hour been digging through old threads/posts and it seems to me that they were available from 68-72? Is there anything externally that distinguishes a regular 9" from a 9" with a 9 3/8" ring gear? Thanks for the help!
