filling coolant

i did a coolant change the other day and filled it. my question is that i went for a ride came back let it sit for a few hours then went out to see if it was low. it wasn't. so i left the radiator cap of and ran the engine for about while i went and looked at the filler neck. the coolant started to rise and then slowly spill over. my question is this normal?

Yes, that's (part of) what the overflow bottle is for. Liquid (in general) expands as it is heated.

thanks i thought i had a problem or something. i did the thermostat too.
