Need Help!

My factory temp gauge was not working so i wanted to fix it. Put in new sensor and gauge is working good but the problem is after about 20 to 30 mins. of running the red engine light comes on. It has only came on once and that's when the thermostat got stuck and it over heated. I have an 1989 f150 with a 4.9 in it, i know that the engine light only comes on for about two reasons, oil and temp. The truck is full of water and not leaking the oil gauge works and does move a little form time to time but for the most part stays in range. The temp reads normal with the gauge, so if any one can help me out as to why this engine light is coming on i would love the help. Also when it does come on i put the heat on and after a few mins. the light goes out but once i cut it off it will come back on.

Put an aftermarket guage on your truck. The factory guages are very unreliable and inaccurate. Or see if you can find a shop that can test the two with a test guage that they have.
