I asked this in the fuel section but no responce so here it goes. I was wondering if you were to remove the air valve and weights on a carter AFB if you could use it like a mechanical setup?
WHY would you want to use it like a mechanical set up? Do you suppose that if you force your engine to accept fuel that it is not ready for that it will make more power? This is not a diesel, so black smoke is not cool.(well, IMO black smoke on a diesel isn't cool either, wasted fuel, and a road hazzard) Have you tried reading the book that comes with the carb, or read the edelbrock tuning guide on how to make your truck run with it? When the carb is properly set up, you wont have a BOG or hesitation when the secondaries open, nor wait for them to open when the motor hits 5000 rpm. Adjust it, and tinker per the manual, before you make it run worse.
I have in fact read the manual and I have also called edelbrock for help. Their suggestions did not work well at all. No matter what I do the hesitation is still there. I was just wondering how it would act if I took the air valve out. That is why I asked here before I went messing with it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
is this a new carb or and old one picked off of another ride? might have some junk in it or need a rebiuld. if all else fails try this guy he's done 3 carbs for me and they turned out awsome. www.kineticperformance.net you shouldnt need to force more feul into it, it should make it stumble even worse

If you have a "real" afb, as in carter, and not the refined version from edelbrock, then you need to read the carter performance book, not edelbrock's. There are differences. The carter book has a whole chapter dedicated to the modification of the air valve, specifically the grinding/removal of counterweights and/or complete plate. The whole design premise of this carb evolves around this air valve and they address the dangers of tampering with it. In all out race applications, there has been some success with mods, but in most street/off-road applications, it is best left alone. Do the tuning the proper way with the strip kit and the adjustable accelerator pump speed and volume, tied in of course, with proper vacuum signaling and pertinent ignition adjustments and it should work out fine. If you continue to struggle with it, seek out an experienced carter tuner.
