i just got my engine rebuilt at a local machine shop and the kid that did it said the new oil pump uses a bigger shaft than the old one? maybe he's just been looking at parts from too many engines. anyway i was wondering if this shaft will fit my distributor or if i need a new distributor now? did for use 2 different size shafts? the engine is a 79 460. i guess technically i dont know what he is comparing. the first engine i took in was a 75 with no oil pump on it. they said the block was junk but crank and heads were ok. 2nd engine was 79 with good block, junk crank. they got the engine together, just curious about the shaft. think he was just mixed up on his parts. thanks for any thoughts

I don't know but, warning bells went off the minute I read " the kid that did it said ".
The oil pump shaft should be 5/16's hex. There are some billet shafts on the market that are 3/8's diameter but still have the same hex size. Look at your paperwork to see what oil pump they installed and post the # here.
AND check the crank if you use the 1 from the 76 block in the 79 block i'm thinkin the crank will hit (won't spin )counterweights will hit if i remember right
yes the counterweights did hit the block but they clearanced the block for it. i knew that could have been an issue but wasn't sure if my setup was the requirements for it or if that was only with stroker kits. i did get my engine back but they didn't have the ticket done so i don't have the paperwork on it yet.
hopefully they used all the parts from the 75 and just the block from the 79. the 79 was an external balanced crank, while the 75 was an internal balance, so make sure that they used the correct flywheel and balancer for the crank.
better to ask and make sure before you crank up that 460.
