I was wondering if you could take a 5 speed tranny out of a newer (late 80's early 90's) ford, and change the bellhousing off a 4 speed and bolt it on the 5 speed "engine 390 4 wheel drive" and make it work.

If you have a divorced transfer case there is a strong possibility that you can, you will need a 5 speed tremec TKO transmission (around $1400) and a spacer to move it back about 3/4" and possibly new driveshafts if you have to move the transfer case. you'd probably be better off running taller tires or higher gears.
