Post Broke Again

I have a '74 4X4 F-250. It has a 360 or 390 in it. It has Mallory
dual point distributor, aluminum intake, Holley 600 Cfm four barrel,
headers etc. I just had a rebuilt transmission put in it. Anyways,
to get to the point. I was driving it the other day, when it started
to miss. This quickly went to where it almost wouldn't run at all.
I just barely got back to the house. It did something like this summer before last. Then it was the points. I try to start it now and it will bark , backfire and carry on and sometimes start right up and run good for approximately 10-30 seconds, then it starts acting up again. It's only been a year and half, could the points be bad again? Their Mallory parts. I have the a stock coil on it, could it be the culprit? Does the dual points distributor need more volts than what the stock coil can provide? I should just break down and get the unilite electronic conversion. If it put that in, do I need a different coil then too?

Thanks in Advance,

If your engine is stock, it’s a 360, no 390s in the 4X4. The rubbing block on the points could be worn, the higher spring pressures will take its toll. Regular duty points wear approximately .001” per 1000 miles. In the ‘70s I used to run an Accel dual-point dizzy, the points adjustment was a regular occurrence plus a real pain in the you know what. First block one and set the dwell, then both in the circuit and adjust the dwell again. It wouldn’t hurt to change the condenser too.

The dizzy is a switch for the current through the coil, the voltage isn't critical for a points system to work unless it's too low to saturate the coil. Can you get a conversion kit for the Mallory? The coil can remain the same.

Mallory makes a electronic conversion kit for their Y25 Dualpoint distributors. Seems like it would a simple task to complete it. I've never been any good at getting that dual point set up right. I've always had to finally get a pro to do it. Thanks for the info
