428 Deal

I have been planning to build up my 390 from my 360 and I was looking at picking up a 390 to get the crank and rods out of it. The guy told me on the phone he has a 428 standard engine he will sell for $500.

That sounds kind of high to me, but I am wondering what a 428 is worth. I am interested to build up a 428 if that is a good deal. Since the 390 and 428 have the same stroke, how can I tell what the engine actually is? Can I get casting numbers and tell from those?

Is the 428 a lot better engine to build up???

First off the 390 has a 3.78" stroke and the 428 has a 3.98" stroke. The 428 cranks alone have gone for $500. The motor is definitely worth the money. Pay no attention to casting number as for instance the C6ME-A casting is supposed to be a 428 but is often a standard 390. Measuring bore and stroke is about the only way. The 428 blocks also have a 4.13" bore standard and can usually only go .030 over (sometime less) so find out if it has been bored before or not. Anyway it is a deal.

Horsetruck, that does sound a little high. Why don't you give me his name and number?

428 Deal

OK thanks guys. I've spent the last couple hours reading all the 428 threads and now understand the differences in the 390 and the 428, and what it might be worth.

I plan to go check it out and measure to see if it is a 3.98 stroke, then just pray it is an acutal 428 rather than 410.

I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks.

There is a build tag under the coil, if it hasn't been pulled. That could help.

So what's wrong with a 410? True, you give up .080 in bore and 18 cubic inches (actually, it's only 16, as the so-called 428 really only displaces 426.5 cubic inches, but Ford had to distinguish it from the 427 and didn't want it to seem smaller), but how noticeable is that? It's less than a 4% loss in displacement, and most of your torque comes from the stroke, anyway. Desktop Dyno shows only negligible power and torque gains of a 428 over a 410. Besides, 410 pistons are readily available and cheap, and a 410 block is more likely to be rebuildable than a 428 block, especially if it's previously been bored.

Maybe nothing is wrong with a 410, although if I had my preference, I'd love to find it is a 428 never been bored. And better yet no worn ridges in the cylinder.

Hey Jowlinker, what about this tag under the coil? Do you mean there is a date stamp or something? Can you clarify please?

Would you guys recommend the same componenets to build up a 428 as the 390. I was planning on the crane 343801 cam, RPM manifold, and TRW-L2291F pistons. Head work would be the same to port and get the 428 CJ valves, since this is just the standard 428 with 390 heads. Would these components still be the recommendations for a 428. Are the piston sizes the only difference in components that I need to buy?

The main differences you will be dealing with between the 428 and the CJ is intake manifold, heads and rod bolt size. Since you should be using ARP bolts anyway the 428 size ARP are much stronger than the Ford CJ size bolts. I agree about the 410. Its a great find but 428 would be a little better. For what I do with my truck I like my 390 though. I have a little more torque than my tires know what to do with. I couldn't imagine what a 428 would be like with the cam I have.

Hey Jowilker,

You must be calling me Horsetrack because I messed up your name on the last note. That's alright.\\
I have not yet looked for the tag, I plan to go look at the engine on Saturday. I just wondered what I am looking for?

Well, crud.

He already sold the 428 before I could get it. He does have a cobra car with a 428 CJ but I don't want the whole car for $7,000.
