My buddy has a 97 350 with banks sidewinder, exhaust, intercooler, chip etc... His truck has the nicest "whistle" to it! I have a 92 350 crewcab with the stock banks turbo and a k&n filter inside the square filter housing. When I get on it I hear the turbo "spool" up , but it's just a "vvvmmmm" sound! How can I get that "whistle"? He said his was that way until he put a K&N cold air intake on. So should I get rid of that filter "box" and run a K&N with nothing around it from the intake duct? I know this will help the truck breathe better even though I still have the stock exhaust(that will come off soon, I might just cut the muffler off for now) I'm curious to hear what your trucks sound like! Thanks.
the whistle of the turbo comes through the exhaust, not the intake. to hear it, you have to get rid of the muffler.
and your 92 idi runs at a much lower boost level than your Buddy's 97 powerstroke does.

You could do what tjc transport said, a lot of it is in the tone of your muffler that you're hearing..... check out some of our muffler options here at the MotorHaven shop http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/exhausts-mufflers/20A50460A1.aspx and paired with the K&N, you'll hear more than a difference and feel it too. Check out the product pages here for K&N intakes and we have several first hand customer reviews that go into good detail about each intake http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/air-intakes/20A50323A1.aspx
Run a straight pipe exhaust. Also eliminate your CDR valve and run it into your exhaust pipe down low where it's cool. Cut a fitting into your exhaust pipe with a 45 deg angle (angled toward the rear).
DieselDogCatcher over at Oilburners.net did this and it whistles like a semil
