All new heavy duty diesels built after January 1, 2007 must have a diesel particulate filter in the exhaust system to capture particulate matter (soot). This filter must be regenerated (regen) periodically to oxidize the soot that's been trapped. Basically, regens clean out the filter so it can collect more soot.

It is the process of regenerating or cleaning out of the DPF in the exhaust system. It is done by adding extra fuel to the system to burn off the soot caught in the DPF. It probably does some other computer related things because when regen occuurs the boost dropps off or if idling then rpm go up and the exhaust temp goes up also
