I bought a 1996 F150 4x4 with a 302 and 5 speed transmision. The truck runs and sounds good.It has 138,000 miles on it.It will be more or less a hunting truck and some daily driving. All the owner before me did was change oil every 3K miles. Is there anything major I need to do to the engine like timing chain replacement? Also the older gentleman before me used 20w50 oil.Do I need to stick with this? He said they used it in all the trucks where he worked so he used it in his.
Tough question.....Sure.......you could do lots of things.....major and minor........the question becomes......do you need to spend the money and time if it runs good and shows no problems. There is no set time for replacing a timing belt.....or ball joints.....or u-joints....or "etc:
I would do a tune-up.....change the fluids....inspect it good including underneath.....make sure gauges are all reading properly and enjoy it. It sounds like you got a nice one........we like PICS too!!!!
These trucks like MotorCraft plugs......Ford Racing makes a set of 9MM wires that work very well......make sure you route the wires correctly as it really matters on the 5.0. I upgraded to an MSD cap. rotor and coil but again MotorCraft would be fine.
Doing the basics gives you a starting point and time to refer to rather than what the PO says.
