So I have another question for all of you Ford experts. I have a 98 F-150 XL Supercab with the 4.6L. It did not come with fog lights and I have been wanting to put some in. On my lower bumper there are cut outs where the stock fog lights would go they just have covers over them currently. I have been looking into installing some stock fog lights in the stock location. The problem that I am having is finding stock fog lights that will mount in that location and if I will be able to tie them into my headlight swith. My current headlight switch does not say pull for fog lights but I am able to pull it out as if to turn my non existant fog lights on. Is it possible for me to istall some stock fog lights (Where would I find them?) and is it possible for me to wire them into my stock headlight switch? Thanks.
I did this upgrade myself when my 98 was less than a year old - back then the kit that was available was around 200-250 dollars I belive. It comes with a new headlight switch (you won't be able to use your old one) and also comes with the entire wiring harness you'll need plus 1 or 2 relays you have to mount. I did the whole thing in an afternoon and as I remember it was a pretty simple job and the instructions explained everything. I think your dealer should carry this kit as well. *note - I just found the kit listed from an online parts dealer - shows MSRP and their price.
Thanks for the info. That is very helpful. Do you remember what on-line parts store you order your kit from? I am just curious so that I don't have to go to the dealer but I may end up going that route anyway. Thanks again for the information and hopfully I can figure something out.
I believe it was www.fordparts.com or something similar. If you do a google search for OEM ford parts - or Ford parts you shouldn't have any trouble. there are lots out there and you just select browse catalog and put in your year/model etc. There seems to be a standard catalog format when searching on these sites - you want to look under body parts, then select "front lamps" then "Fog Lamps" then "fog lamp" and it will list "kit to add fog lamp". Just search around a little and you should find it without any trouble.
I can't explain why there are wires hanging there - but the light switch pulls out so you can remove it so it should be marked if its the fog light switch - the light switch is rather a unique setup, to remove the switch you pull out the **** - insert a paper clip into the hole at the base of the switch and depress a locking tab to remove the **** - then turn the **** 180 degrees and reinsert it on the switch and turn it - there is a tab at the base of the **** you cannot see when the **** is in place that when rotated (after its reinstalled 180 degrees) retracts some spring loaded "arms" that hold the switch housing in the dash panel. If that makes any sense.
yeah...becuase i bought one fog light(wrecker for $10)...and i plugged it in and tried it...and it did not work...i thought maybe it was just the bulb...but now you got me wondering if it might be switch and/or wiring as well.

Yeah...when I was doing my heater core, I didn't know about this and tried to pry it off with a screwdriver. I broke it, and now it's chipped and dinged up all around the edge and glued back together...

Thankfully it was my fog light add on project that educated me on this matter which made changing my dash lights MUCH easier to replace before I had found this forum!! making such a complicated process to remove a simple switch that hides a key dash bolt is almost evil! Although it is a smart design, and kinda cool when you think about it, and its clean with no exposed screws but damn something like that can drive a guy crazy!
So my 98 f-150 has the wires for fogs lights there and I put fog lights in and they dont work when I pull the switch out. So do I have to take the switch off and rotate it 180 degrees?
you may have the wires there (for some strange reason) but if you're truck was not entirely equiped you may need a different light switch and/or a relay for them to work properly. Pulling out the **** (then pulling it off, rotating it 180, putting it on and turning it will help you take the switch OUT, but does nothing for turning on the fog lights) on vehicles equiped with fog lights you do pull the **** out to turn them on, but it will say on the switch "pull for fog lights" or something like that. If it doesn't you'll at least need the new switch (assuming all other wiring is there) there is also a relay located either in a relay block under the hood or on the fuse panel (I can't remember which) and if its empty - try installing one and it may work with the right switch. Hope that helps.... Good luck!
well i decided not to change the fuse box so i can run my fog lights... Im going to hook them up to a seperate switch. But first I want to make sure that cutting the plug wires wont hurt anything that the same wire harness runs into.
Maybe things were different with the earlier models, but my 03 F150 did not have fog lights, but had the wire connections in place where the lights would have gone. I installed OEM fog lights after switching the valance which did not have the cut outs, replaced the light switch with one that had the fog light settings, and was good to go.
The lights turned on via the switch, I did not have to add any additional wire harness, relays, connectors, etc. Been working for the last five years with no problems.

Good luck finding that kit. I've been trying to find one for two years now and every dealer I've called said they haven't carried it for about 3 years now. Sorry for the news.
