Noisy wheel

Hi folks, I have had this problem off and on with my 84 3/4 ton 4x4. Its a light 3/4 and I have what appears to be some slop between the caliper and the knuckle. The I replaced the rotors months ago and they have since warped a tiny bit. I have replaced the spring pin that locks the caliper in place but the caliper moves still at low speeds and you can hear it easliy. Its almost like the runout on the rotor may be grabing the pads and releasing them. Only hapens at low speed. My next things to do would be to put a shim behind the pads and or use a stronger spring pin/shim to lock the caliper in place. Anyone else had this problem..??

Have you checked your speedo cable? Mine squeeks quite a bit & it took bunch of front-end work for me to figure it out... Just a thought.

Thanks Edwin.

I recently replaced the old 4 speed with a mazda 5 speed. And I don't currently have a speedometer. Relying on the tach right now. I think the gear in the tailshaft of the xfer case is damaged the speedo didn't work in the truck I got the tranny parts from either. I forgot to check that gear before the install.

As far as the noise goes its much like a rock in the tread. But the noise is like a sloppy u-joint noise. I have determined that the caliper is moving but I am not sure how exactly this occoured. I will likely just end up shimming the slop out.

It could be the warp in the rotor that is moving the caliper. I fried a rotor on a Ramcharger I used to have, you could slowly turn the rotor and see exactly where it started pushing on the caliper. It made a noise similar to what you describe.

Yes well I now have a reason to buy another tool. I will get a dial indicator with a magnetic base and I can the see the runout. Probably could see it by eye if its that bad, but i wouldn't mind another tool. Thanks

My first thought was to shim the top side of the caliper where it slides on the knuckle. It appears that this is where the noise may be coming from. After a little bit of thinking I am wondering if the piston is sticking in the bore of the caliper. After I pump the brakes hard a few times the problem dissapears for a while..probably after about 10 or so times of applying the breaks the noise comes back. I am quite busy now with school and will look into it a two weeks when I am out of school and back to work.. I will post what I find..

I don't understand what you are talking about shimming. Can you move the caliper relative to the bracket with the "spring pin" in place? If you can, I'd say something is very wrong or something is missing. Do you have the small leaf spring that straddles the pin?

I've seen this a bit with that style caliper retention, more common with the later stuff, the knuckle itself actually wears to the point that the retainers won't hold it tight.

That was my first assumption. I will try to make a custom retainer. One with a greater arc to take up the wear.
