I have an 05 f-350 with the 6.0 and a 6-speed trans. I bought it used but have had no problems since i bought it. For about a week now the idle has been surging, when i am sitting at a stop light the rpms will jump up ~100 rpm or drop down the same. It does not follow any pattern sometimes it is worse than others. It also does this while driving at a constant rpm - you can feel the truck surge slightly. I have unplugged the egr valve in hopes that this would solve it but it has made little to no difference. I do not see any smoke, my dad has an 04 that was blowing out smoke and surging and the egr unplug fixed it. Any thoughts on what i could do to fix this problem?
So far I love this truck, tons of power - so far my only mods are boost and egt gauges.
Do not un plug your EGR and leave it for any long periods. Your EGR cooler will fail and cause your coolant to pour into your motor. Do an EGR delete or on your 2005 you will want to replace the turbo up-pipe and install the EGR delete plate. I did it on mine and it really works. Take your truck into the dealer there maybe something else wrong.
Thanks hangon2me - I am hoping to take it in this weekend. Does unplugging the egr valve on an 04 have the same affect as it does on an 05? I have never heard of the cooler failing, my dad has been running for a couple of months like that.

Surging can be caused by a bad ICP sensor, turbo problems or a number of other sensor failures. You need to take your truck in and have the 6.0 tech read the codes stored in the PCM and do proper diagnostics on the truck. Your truck should still be under warranty.

Well no not exactly. Unplugging the EGR valve properly (with the motor off and the EGR valve in the closed position) will not hurt anything in your motor. Yes the EGR cooler will still be receiving hot exhaust gas but it will not pass into the motor. In addition even if the EGR cooler develops and internal coolant leak the coolant cannot pour into your motor since the EGR valve is turned off and closed.
Yes blocking off the exhaust up-pipe feed to the EGR cooler & turning off the EGR valve is the best way to eliminate all potential problems with the EGR cooler and EGR valve, it will also void the engine warranty.
that makes sense - if you have the valve closed when unplugging it there would not be any way for the coolant to get into the engine. I did unplug it with the engine off, i will give ford a chance to fix the strange surging problem.

you have never heard of the egr cooler failing thing because it just isn't true. the only difference between the 04 and the 05 in terms of unplugging the egr is that on an 04 you don't get a CEL, and i believe the 05 will get a light.
unplugging the egr will not cause any failure of your egr cooler. mine was unplugged for quite a while. 04. only reason it was ever plugged back in is because i have an SCT which disables the egr funtion anyway.
i believe the sct is the only way to disable egr and not get a check engine light.
