Ideal Air Filter Size

My MAF conversion required fabrication of a complete air intake system from the throttle body to the air filter + relocation of the air filter. Initially, I had puchased an AEM DRYFLOW filter (so I don't get oil on the mass airflow sensor) with an element that measures 9 inches in length...my thought was bigger is better and since I am fabricating this I can make any size work so I might as well go for the big one. But, I am running into space issues. The spot that I plan on installing the air filter, which is the ONLY spot that I will be able to make a COLD AIR system (behind drivers side headlight), will not allow for the 9 inch filter. The next size down is 5 inchs in length and I am certain that can make that work but I am begining to wonder if 5 inches is too small and may become a choke point so to speak.

Has anyone ever done or heard of a before and after comparison of various filter sizes with all else equal? What were the results?

I haven't done a search so I can't say for sure. But it seems that at least one mfg. would make a dry 7 inch (if you're not stuck on the AEM, just dry) & they've been on high hp mustangs for years with no breathing problems.

just did my MAF conversion and used stock air filter housing out of a 96 bronco got the 1 into 2 piece MAF sensor AIT sensor everything for 95.00 dollars at a wrecking yard. also the crankcase breather hose is after the MAF not before like MAP systems i hope your conversion was easier than mine, what a pain in the rear!!! AND STILL having trans issues.

Yea my 94 is maf and the oil breather hooks into air hose right before throttle body .You could make one It wont be a fresh air unless you build a box for it and duct it to grill area. You can switch window washer around to get room. Good luck

I don't have the oil breather tube because I converted to a road draft system, so I don't have to worry about that.

I will be building a box to surround the MAS housing and filter. That is how I will achieve the cold air effect.

Window washer is gone already as is the cruise control. If they were still there then there would be NO room in that area.
