360/390 flywheel

I want to swap the 360 in my 76 f250 4x4 with a 390 that was in 63 fairlane with c6 auto trans. Will the flywheel from the 360 bolt up to the 390? If not, what do I need to look for if I go to the junk yard looking for 390 flywheel manual trans? Will the clutch from the 360 work with the 390 flywheel? Any suggestions for the swap would be greatly appreciated.

There is no difference in the flywheel, the only difference is the pistons, crank stroke and rods. It's an excellent upgrade and a good time to look into a new cam too.

Thanks for the help Karljay, I was getting a little scared , as I've been getting conflicting info. The motor came from a '63 Fairlane and it has a 4 barrel. It was mostly a weekend cruise car in SE Michigan. Gratiot and Woodward car. The guy did like to run it though, had headers also. Only 2 years of summertime cruisin on rebuild... On the cam, I don't know what to do , but the guy told me to leave everything alone and put it in the truck? I recently drove a '76 f250 with a 390 and I can't believe the difference over a 360. And I am the original owner of my F250 4x4 with a stock 360. The 390 had headers though, and mine has single exhaust. With the original crossover pipe, if you can believe that! Might have been stainless?.....thanks again Jerry.

Karljay is correct. The ONLY difference between a 360 and a 390 is crank, rods and pistons. Don't believe anything else. The stock cam in the truck 360/390 are also the same. Some of the higher performance 390's got the CJ cam. A bigger cam can really wake it up.

You need to check one other thing -- the motor mount bosses. Older FE blocks are only drilled for two bolts per side. I can't remember when Ford switched to four bolt motor mounts on the FE, but I think it was '65 or '66. I'm betting that your '63 Fairlane motor only has two bolt holes per side, whereas your truck is set up for four bolts. You can probably have the bosses drilled and tapped for the extra bolts, but I don't know for sure, and it will certainly add to the time and expense of the conversion.

There are no extra bosses on the earlier blocks, just the two bolt mounting scheme. How did they fit a FE in a ’63 Fairlane, it’s only wide enough for the smallblock until ’66 when it became an intermediate instead of a compact.

I have seen a few blocks that have the extra bosses, though they weren't drilled out. I agree that the earliest blocks don't even have the extra bosses, though. I'm just not sure when Ford began casting them with four bosses. I suspect that during a transition period they were casting all blocks with four bosses, but only drilling all four out on blocks destined for cars that had been redesigned for the new four bolt mounts.

360/390 flywheel

It's really bugging me now, the motor is in a crate. I wasn't planning on using it for a while. I saw the car , he is putting a 460 into it now. I've never done an engine before and maybe I never will! from reading these forums , I thought they were all the same, FE=FE.I am the original owner of 76 F250 4x4 w/360.
The main reason I bought the 390 was that I recently drove one in a 76 F250, he claimed it was from a 64 truck. I liked it so much , I bought the truck, lol. That's the one without the flywheel inspection cover It was a sad story.."bitter divorce, the ex wife won't let him near the house to retrieve the cover". Well, I went and got one from a junk yard and because the shorty headers are in the way, I can't put it on. I think I'm going to try and cut it in half , I think it will go. It's always something. I hope I can find a way to use the motor!

The bolt pattern for the crank is the same on both 360/390 flywheels. However, they use different size clutches.
