intermittent problem, C6 behind a 460.
Anyway, this morning, the truck felt as if it wasn't engaging in drive or reverse at all. I could rev the engine and the truck didn't move. Sounded like there was no load on the engine. After a couple minutes of shifting into different gears, it engaged in drive and worked normally over the course of about an hour of city driving.
I checked the fluid, and it's not low, and the fluid appears to my untrained eye to be OK.
This has happened a couple of times in the past, but not in any pattern that I have noticed.
Since I don't know the year of this tranny, I can't say for sure if it will take Type F or Mercon fluid, and I've heard horror stories about using the wrong one. I have a new filter and gasket ready to go, but I'm leery.
I am sure this problem is just going to get worse over time.
Thoughts?
Delayed or no engagement cold is most likely to be hard seals in the clutches and would require an overhaul to fix it.
A flush and fresh fluid could fix this, but not a guarantee.
As far as the correct fluid, your dipstick should indicate what type of fluid.
I agree with the above statment regarding the use of Mercon, but nobody ever talks about Type H, or even CJ. MAybe nobody remebers these.
For all it is worth, even though most will not aggre with the use of type F fluid, I use type F in later model transmissions. The lack of "conditioner" provies a firm shift. Heak I even run Type F in my GM transmissions.
Regardless, you should determine what is in your trans. You do not want to mix fluids, as foaming and seperation can occur.
As for an overhaul like rclarke suggested. Is this something you can do without pulling the engine and tranny out of the vehicle? I'm pretty handy, but other than filter and fluid, I haven't done much work on auto trannys.
