how to set timing?

My 351w has only one mark on the balancer to indicate where the timing should be set. How does this work? Aren't there supposed to be degree mark so the timing can be set? BTW where did the search function go?

Yes mine has degree marks. Mine were very faint so maybe you need to look a little closer in fact when I found mine I took a small brush and painted them white.

The mark is probably TDC. With the usual strobe, this isn't a lot of help. However, if you get a Craftsman timing light, you'll love it. The back of the Craftsman light has a dial and pointer where you set the timing you want, then shoot the mark and turn the dizzy until it lines up exactly on the pointer. VERY easy to see and set compared to the degree marks on the balancer. Mine was worth every penny.

If you don't have any other marks on the balancer the one mark you do have will be TDC and in that case you should have a degree plate coming off the timing cover. Now this plate is bolted on so it may have been removed and not reinstalled?????

Had that same problem on my 351w. The marks were there but very hard to see. I had to remove the paint that was on the balancer and clean it up real good to finally see the marks.

I dont know the 351's but reading the service book on my '54 239 motor it states one groove on pulley lines up with the end of the pointer and that this is 10 deg.
Be sure to check your service book, if there should be a degree plate or a single mark, the book should let you know.
