Hey guys, I'm just wondering if anybody can tell me the extended (stock) length of the shocks on a '91 Bronco XLT with the quad shock suspension? I'm in need of new shocks and I can't find OEM replacements so I was thinking about getting something identical or slightly longer than the originals, if anybody knows the measurements, I'd really appreciate it, thanks!
I was going to suggest you go to Forums/Search but the search feature is not working for me this morning. Shocks have been discussed many times expressesing preferences but I do not remember length being mentioned. You might try the manufacture's web site. However, I do remember most only run two in the front for a better ride even if they have the quad brackets. I can't remember if they are the forward or rear of the front axle. I think I remember greystreak92 saying the quads make it ride like a bob tail truck. Just a thought unless you have heavy tires to control. Some also prefer removing the sway bar(s) for better articulation if you need it.
well, right now I've got 33x10's all around and the shocks up front, there are two per bank, and the rear shocks are both forward the axle. I was under the impression this is the "quad shock" set up, I could be wrong. I've been looking around for oem replacements, but I keep finding that autoparts stores carry rancho and skyjacker shocks of this or that length. That's okay with me, I'm just tired of my truck being lower in front than in rear due to bad shocks. Thanks though.
Yes, if you have six shocks total with four up front then you have the "quad shocks" option.
Maybe someone has experienced going from six to four if you are interested. I was thinking of going from four to six a couple of years ago and was discouraged from doing it.
shocks won't affect the "lift height", but the front end will deffinetely sit lower and sag with bad/old shocks
Weak coils may cause the front end to sag more than when new, but the front end was always lower even when fresh from the factory. They were built like this so when the back was loaded up to the rating the truck would ride level, rather than dragging its butt.
The OEM Ford shocks should still be available from your local dealer. You should check with them and verify, however the part numbers that I have found are F4TZ-18124-G for the front of axle and 5U2Z-18V124-XA for the rear of the front axle. These are the replacing part numbers to the original part numbers E7TZ-18124-G front of axle and E7TZ-18124-M rear of front axle. I hope this information helps.
Personaly, I don't care for OEM shocks. That is one thing I will not buy to replace on any of my trucks.
Old shocks will NOT make the front sag, that is only the coil springs. Old shocks will not stop the truck from bouncing and you get a unstable feel, expecialy when cornering.
Any shock manufacutor should have shocks to fit your truck, and they should have different lengths. Stock, 1-2" lift, 3-4", etc...
This would be a nice time to install a small lift up front, and put longer shocks(if it doesn't already have a small lift). Just to add, shocks will not affect ride height(unless it is a specialty shock designed for just that, but I don't think they make them for these trucks).
For shocks, I'd suggest Skyjacker Nitro's or Ranch RS5000s, but I'm sure anything would be better.
Put the 2 inch taller skyjacker coil springs on the front with the matching 2 inch longer shocks and the truck will look great. I did this on my 93 f150 4x4.
