I have a 1977 true "Highboy" It has the power assist steering. It worked perfect until 2 weeks ago. The pump started whining and then I stopped driving it. I replaced the pump today and it stopped whining but my steering is just as bad as the old pump.
It will not recenter like it did before. I jacked the truck up after I installed the pump and turned it left to right and back like 10 times making sure it was bled good.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't leak from any where if that helps.
Did you turn it left and right with the truck on, or off? Did you hold it at full lock any? I've never dealt with power assist (thank god) so I am not familiar with its quirks. What type of fluid did you use, and is the fluid look like it has air/foam in it? Did you flush the old fluid out of your system?
I flushed the system. I pulled the pressure line that goes directly into the control valve. It was doing nothing but blowing air. I replaced the pump and tried to bleed it. I believe I started the truck then tried to bleed it. It foamed for a while. Seemed to start getting better but it didn't.
I am using Dextron 3 Transmission fluid as instructed in the Ford manual.
If I can't get this thing fixed it is going up for sale next week. I can't stand driving something without power steering. Especially with 35" Boggers on it.
Don't sell it fix it. You are dealing with 30 year old technology and parts from tha era.
Can't blame a 30 year old component from getting a little tired.
It should have an updated power steering box, and crossover steering by now.
