Gasket question

This is just a general question: What are gaskets made out of? And can you buy the material they are made out /subsitute it with something else and just cut it like the old ones. I've racently pulled the plenum off an 87 ford ranger, and of course the gasets broke taking it off. They almost seem to be some kind of high denisty particle board or cork. I've just put in some new injectors, and neither Autozone or Advanced Auto has the gaskets in stock. So I was wondering if I can just get some identacle or some material that will work, and just cut my own gaskets?

Yeah gaskets are a form of cork. Most autoparts stores sell the material in a roll. I've only ever seen it in rolls about 2' by ?, but I haven't really looked that hard for it either. So, yes you can just buy the cork material and cut it yourself.

Ah, sweet will have to take a look then! Better then waiting over 10 days for 3 small gaskets to come in!

Cork, rubber, paper and copper sheet are all used as gasket materials and can be purchased for making your own. Just try and match the material closest to what the factory used. Sometimes you can just use high-temp RTV or other "form a gasket" paste instead.

Yeah, got the material and made some new gaskets. Bad news is I was swapping my injectors over, was putting a screw in the fuel rail, when i looked away, when i looked back, the screw was gone, and the socket was hovering over the open lower intake. Then I noticed the Cyl 1 lower intake was full of gas. Which meant the intake pushrod fell off - again. I cranked it over a few times just to make sure, and heard no clanging or anything to that sort. But I still am not satisfied that the screw is not in the lower intake somewhere. So it looks like that will be coming off as well
