The E40D is a great trans, but it is full computer controlled. So you need to contact a place called Beauman products, I dont' have their site handy right now, but you might do a search engine on stand alone wiring for computer controlled trans's and find them? Their stuff is really great, but very pricey. I think the controller to run the E40D is around $700? I was goin to run one from a 1995 Lightning in my 56, but after all the stuff you got to do to make it work right, it just aint' worth it. A regular AOD from around the early 90's is TV cable controlled and alot easier to run. They hold up almost as good, as long as you're not goin to be doin alot of jerking around and drag racing? You can have an AOD built to take that kind of abuse, for les than you'd have in the stuff to run an E40D? The E40D is more or less a C6 with OD. I do know you can take the planetarys out of a E40D and use them in a C6, that way you can have a lower 1st and 2nd gear. Drive is the same in both trans's 1:1 but you wouldn't have OD that way. I'm thinkin about doin that for my 56? Dont know yet? Maybe some of the transmission guru's will chime in here and help out a little more?
Just curious...if one would want the performance of an AOD trans why not run an EFI engine as well? One engine control module takes care of both systems AND you get a smooth running, responsive engine to boot.
I already have a built motor and was looking to upgrade just the trans cause the fmx has worked great but since I am stepping up the gears from 3.89 to 4.11 posi I would prefer the od to help with some of the mileage loss.
You'll need an adapter from THESE guys probably if you're going to use a Y-block.. I don't know if anyone else makes one.
You also have to fabricate the truck engine mounts too. I still want to use the tranmission location for mounting...
I need to use the E4OD since I have no other way to have a trans mounted E-brake. The F-450 trans mounted brake will work just right. Also I have an E4OD out of an F-450 so it's plenty strong enough to handle the max GCVW of my F-600. An AOD would probably break otherwise. THe guy I got the E4OD from routinely towed a mini excavator with the F-450. THe whole mess weighed around 20K. I not sure an AOD would survive long towing those kind of weights in front of a 7.3L diesel.........
I was told (by the same guy above) that ANY E4OD (diesel, 460, smallblock bell/case) can be built with the same clutch packs, gears, and other internals etc.... THe one that would work with the Y-block would be the one that bolts to a 351 V-8.
Also, I want to take advantage of the lockup TC and the over drive gears with my 2 speed axle. That should give me a pretty tall highway gear.
I plan on using an after market trans controller too. There's several. They're all around $600-800 though...
I ruled out a Gear Vendors unit. They cost a fortune.
Cheers,
Rick
