97 F150

Hello!

I just ordered a set of 16x8 Ultra Baja Champs in black and chrome. I was planning on putting a set of 265-75-16 or 285-75-16 tires. What gears are ideal for these tires? 3.91 or 4.10? Is it a good idea to put a Traction Lok in the front and rear diffs for max traction? I have 3.55's right now and they are almost no good.

This is for a all stock 1997 F150 4x4 with a 4.2 V-6. What are the rpms at 65-75 with the 265's and 285's with either 3.91's or 4.10's?

Thanks!

With the V6, I wouldn't get any less than the 4.10. I might even suggest a 4.30 gear set for the front and rear. You only want to do the swap one time so choose the one that will make you the most happy. Mileage will suck either way with 33inch tires.

They dont make 4.30's for the front 8.8.

I would highly suggest 4.56 gears. My truck is gutless with 33's and 3.55's...and I have the 4.6L. That V6 is going to need 4.56's at minimum. If you're gunna do it, do it right the first time...you'll be wanting more if you go with 4.10's.

As for the traction-lock, do you have one now in the rear? If you do you can put some new Clutch plates in it and it will work good again.
Yes definetly go with 4.56s with that v6, the cheapest decent mud terrain are probably the Buckshot Mudders.
265/75-16=$118
265/75-16HD=about $130
285/75-16=129

I didn't think you could get a 4x4 with a V6. Hmmm.

Yes you can get a 4x4 with a V6. I have seen them. I wouldn't put a traction lock in the front. It will really try to bind up the front axle when turning.

I think the only way you could get the V6 and 4x4 was to have the regular cab. I have looked at the options list for a 97 F150 and it shows that the supercab 4x4s at least got the 4.6.

Won't 4.56's tach the 4.2 too high on the highway? I do some occasional highway driving.

No, I don't have a Traction Lok in the rear. I would like to get max traction in the snow and mud and not have to use 4wd all the time.

Thanks

I dont know what rpms you run now but it will probably raise the rpms about 400-600 with 4.56.
Well since you dont have a traction lock in the rear, the most cost effective way to go is to get a detroit truetrac or something similar. They dont use clutch plates that wear out like the ford piece.

According to some guys here, I'm running between 2100-2300 rpm at 70-75.

The 4.56's are WAY too much for highway driving. This is my daily driver. I need a gear that I can live with. I was gonna put on 265's.

Thanks

Put your numbers in here and see what rpm/mph combo you get from your gears/tires/trans final ratio.

With my 285's and stock 3.55 gears, Im running 2500 RPM at 65mph OUT of OD, and somewhere between 1800-1900 in OD.

If I'm cruising in OD (very, very, very rare) I have to take it out at the slightest incline. Hell...I can't even run the Interstate (which is flat...even downhill at times) from town to the shopping center/mall in OD at 65mph. These things are gutless. I have only used OD twice in the past 2 years I've owned this truck...and that was when it had 265's on it and no exhaust leak.

I'd rather turn 2500 RPM's in OD, than to run the highway at 3100-3200 RPM's and not be able to use OD...

What are the gears in the trans and transfer case? I have a 5 speed.

Can I get away with 4.10's with the 5 speed or am I stuck with the 4.56's?

As to the response about 4.30's not available for the front end, but is available for the rear, aren't front and rear 8.8's the same? I don't see why a rear gear wouldn't fit in the front. If they do, I would like to stay with that gear ratio.

Thanks

Obviously, the auto and manual transmissions have different gear ratio's, but all transfer cases are direct drive (1:1 ratio) while in 2WD or high range. However, you will still have the same problem while in 5th gear on the highway. Once a slight hill comes up, you will be bogging down and downshifting on every one. I have a V8 and still can't use OD with 285 tires. How do you think your V6 will do? But personally, I like lower gears for the offroad and towing performance, plus the seat-of-the-pants feel.

And no, the front and rear differentials are completely different. The front uses reverse-cut gears.
